Who Should Play Nightwing in the DCEU?
Written By: Nick Poulimenakos
Shortly after DC and Warner Bros. confirmed that Matt Reeves will helm the Ben Affleck led solo film, The Batman, a second bomb was dropped as DC announced that they are developing a Nightwing standalone movie. Chris McKay, director of the critically acclaimed The Lego Batman Movie, will direct the feature with Bill Debuque (writer of The Accountant) taking on script duties. No release date has been set but naturally, as soon as this news came to light, I started wondering about who DC and WB would cast as the former Robin? So, without further ado, here are my picks for who should play Nightwing in the DCEU!
- Ben Barnes
Ben Barnes, who is famous for his roles in Westworld and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, seems like an unlikely choice for the character given that he was cast in the upcoming Netflix/Marvel production, The Punisher. However, this doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t be a great choice for the hero of Bludhaven. Barnes has shown that he can be quite the actor, taking on the role of both an action hero and a dramatic character in many of his projects. Add in that he has the look for an older Dick Grayson and Barnes proves that he would be a solid pick for the first Robin.
- Taron Egerton
Taron Egerton has taken audiences by storm. After starring in the acclaimed action film, Kingsman: The Secret Service, his stock has only continued to rise as he has acted in films such as Sing, Eddie the Eagle and the upcoming Robin Hood: Origins. He has demonstrated that he can hold his own during fight scenes and is more than capable of pulling off the more emotional side of Nightwing.
- Richard Madden
An actor best known for his fantastic role as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones (who happens to be my personal favourite GOT character), Richard Madden would be an excellent choice for Nightwing. Madden has shown that he has the charisma and talent to take on such a high profile role. As seen in GOT and Cinderella, Madden can be both a lighthearted sidekick and a true action hero which proves why he should be a top contender for the role of Nightwing.
- Garrett Hedlund
I have been a fan of Garrett Hedlund ever since Tron: Legacy came out. I thought he was great in Tron, Inside Llewyn Davis, Unbroken and Four Brothers. Hedlund definitely has the look for Nightwing and can turn in solid action and dramatic performances. He’s imposing enough to go toe to toe with Batfleck himself which may be a downside to casting him but other than this, he’s pretty much perfect for the role; all he needs is the chance.
- Michael B. Jordan
This pick comes from the third member of Talkies Network, JJ Simoes. He’s really hoping that this will happen so I thought I’d write about it. Michael B. Jordan is one of the best actors working today. From Fruitvale Station to Creed, Jordan has demonstrated time and time again that he is at the top of his game and the thought of him possibly being Nightwing is almost too good to pass up. He’s probably the one of the least likely candidates as he is busy with Marvel Studios working on Black Panther as the main villain, Erik Kilmonger. However, actors have switched studios before. Jordan himself made the jump from Fox to Disney/Marvel after Fantastic Four tanked critically and commercially. He’s got the look, acting chops and the charisma. But does Jordan really want to make the jump to another studio producing superhero films? Only time will tell…
- Steven Yeun
Famously known for his role as fan-favourite zombie fighter Glenn from The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun would be a phenomenal choice for Nightwing. Yeun would bring both lighthearted and darker aspects to the age-old character because he can play both ends of the spectrum extremely well. Having demonstrated his versatility as an actor by playing both the action star and the character that carries the emotional weight, Yeun would nail the role of the former sidekick turned hero. He has the look of a superhero, the charm of one and he’s old enough to play a veteran Dick Grayson. What more could you ask for?
- Kit Harrington
My pick for Nightwing is probably the biggest longshot. Unless The Batman and/or the Nightwing solo film shoot after Game of Thrones finishes or during its offseason, I can’t see Harrington taking the role. However, he is still perfect for the job. He’s literally the total package. He’s got the look, the age, the captivation, the acting chops (watch any episode of season six of GOT and tell me otherwise), and he even wants to play a superhero. He’s one of the most adaptable actors on this list and can hold his own in any kind of scene. Should things work out with his GOT shooting schedule, Kit Harrington is my definitive pick for Nightwing.
Honourable Mentions: Dev Patel, Jared Padalecki, Steven R. McQueen, Tyler Hoechlin, Dan Stevens, Sam Clafin and Andrew Garfield.
