2 days after Warner Bros. dropped the newest trailer for Justice League (which was totally kick-ass by the way), Marvel and Disney come right back with the newest look at Spider-Man: Homecoming. Unlike the first one, which was more upbeat, this new trailer takes the film in the another direction, giving viewers the darker side of the film, focusing more on Michael Keaton’s Vulture and the various conflicts Peter faces throughout the feature film. With all that in mind, here are Talkies Network’s picks for the 5 best moments from the second Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer.
- Ned Leeds
Okay the trailer might have been darker but not all of it was gloomy. The second trailer gives fans more of Peter’s best friend in the film, Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon. Leeds will play the role of lending moral support to the young superhero. He’s one of the few people who know Peter’s secret identity and he’s having fun with it. He’s curious about what his friend has become, what he can do, and is worried about how hard Peter pushes himself. Plus, that scene where he tries on the mask is just hilarious.
- “I would do anything to protect my family”
So, the reason why this trailer seemed grittier than the first was because of its focus on Michael Keaton as main villain, Adrian Toomes, aka. The Vulture. The trailer showcases the goals of the antagonist in a rather ambiguous way. In the trailer, Vulture says “the world is changing boys, time we change with it,” which could possibly hint at Toomes wanting to enter a new age of villainy. From their however, he says the line about protecting his family. This adds a whole new layer for the character, hinting that there is more to Toomes than what we have seen. Keaton has described the character as working for a salvage company that is eventually pushed out of business by Tony Stark. Could the loss of his company have impacted his life with family? Does Vulture know Peter’s true identity? We’ll have to wait and see…
- The Action
While the first trailer showed Peter in his high school life, the second trailer was much more action-packed, putting Spider-Man fighting various goons on full display. Fans get another look at the cruise ship splitting sequence but this time, Iron Man is shown (with a new suit) swooping in to save the day. We then see Spidey literally steering an airplane with his webbing which is just plain awesome. Finally we see Spider-Man rescuing bystanders in an elevator accident. I’m including this scene in my favourites list because at least we know that one Spider-Man can save someone in an elevator shaft ;).
- Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man
THE FAMOUS LINE IS FINALLY SPOKEN! Near the beginning of the trailer, Tony questions Peter saying “can’t you just be a friendly, neighbourhood Spider-Man?” In his quest to keep Peter safe, Tony continues to push Peter to stray more towards low-level villains and not worry about guys like Vulture and his gang. It was a cool moment to hear the iconic line from such a different perspective. Normally Peter embraces the “friendly neighbourhood” title but here, it’s used as a way for Tony to keep Peter from becoming an Avenger-esque superhero.
- “If you’re nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it”
Speaking of Tony not wanting Peter to end up like him, we have the best moment of the trailer. After Tony saves the cruise ship and Peter himself, he berates Peter for putting himself into a situation that could have gotten him killed. Peter responds with wanting to be like Tony but Tony doesn’t want that, he wants Peter to be better than him. He then orders Peter to return the suit but Peter feels that suit makes the hero leading Tony to say the line above. Not only does this force Peter to go back to using his homemade suit, but it also gives the main character the story arc of “earning the suit back.” The relationship between Peter and Tony seems to be along the lines of a makeshift father/son story and I can’t wait to see what these characters bring to the reboot film.
And that’s our list! Do you agree with our choices? Tell us what your favourite moments are from the new trailer and for all things in nerd culture and entertainment, keep it locked on Talkies Network!
