A couple of days ago, DC and Warner Bros. once again shocked the world, announcing that Joss Whedon will be writing, producing and directing a solo film centred on Batgirl. The rumor is that the film will take its inspiration from Gail Simone’s New 52 run with the character (Barbra Gordon) and I could not be more excited. DC is looking to expand its ever growing cinematic universe and building the bat-family is a step in the right direction. While it is unclear as to where this film would fit in the DCEU timeline, here are the Talkies Network picks for who should take on the mantle of Batgirl!
- Chloe Bennett
This pick comes JJ. How ironic would it be for an actress who has consistently bashed the DCEU to one day join it as one of the company’s most iconic female heroes? Comments aside, Chloe Bennett would be a solid choice for the daughter of Commissioner Gordon. While her schedule will likely be filled thanks to her role in the MCU series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Bennett has the talent to lead her own superhero feature. Her character on AOS is both a kick-ass fighter and a computer hacker, which are the two essential components to the Barbra Gordon character.
- Jane Levy
Jane Levy has been on quite a roll lately, starring in both the acclaimed Evil Dead remake and the horrifically fun Don’t Breathe. In both films she demonstrated an undying determination and a lust for putting herself through physically demanding films. She carries the classic Barbra Gordon look and is not afraid of a challenge. A DCEU Batgirl film will probably be along the lines of gritty and bodily challenging which makes Levy a strong choice for the classic character.
- Lindsey Morgan
Lindsey Morgan, who made a name for herself as the computer genius, Raven, on the hit CW series The 100, is the rumored frontrunner for the coveted role. She would also be the youngest to appear on our list. Morgan would be a definite fresh face to help interpret the film version of Batgirl – a character that has been seen on screen for numerous years. Being biracial, she would also bring some much needed diversity to the superhero genre (which the DCEU has done a stunning job of so far).
- Evan Rachael Wood
Wood would be the first actress on our list who would play a slightly older version of the character. Best known for starring in the critically acclaimed Westworld, Evan Rachael Wood would be a fantastic choice for Barbra Gordon. Despite not having much experience with big budget films, Wood would definitely be able to channel the inner struggle that Gordon faces along with holding her own during the potential action sequences.
- Zoe Kravitz
The second actress who could potentially make the jump from Marvel to DC, Zoe Kravitz would make an eccentric Batgirl. Having already taken part in a comic book film, starring as Angel in X-Men: First Class, Kravitz continued to impress in her major supporting roles such as Toast in Mad Max: Fury Road, and as Christina in Divergent. All three of these films are action-packed adventures so Kravitz would have no problem during fight sequences. She’s intense, charismatic and above all else, can absolutely act which makes Batgirl the perfect opportunity for Kravitz to take on leading lady status.
- Rose Leslie
You know nothing, Jon Snow… Okay if you have been to this site before, then you know that Kit Harrington (who stars as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones) is my top choice to play Nightwing in the DCEU. How great would it be to see Harrington and Leslie (who played his love interest and skilled fighter Ygritte) together on screen, fighting with Affleck as part of the bat-family? It’s hard not look at her and see Barbra Gordon thanks to the red hair. She has demonstrated that she can stunningly perform action sequences and has the charm and personality of Barbara.
- Emma Stone
I’m going to assume that whoever is reading this probably saw this coming. If you didn’t well here’s Talkies Network number 1 pick for who should play Batgirl, Emma Stone. Stone has been at the centre of Batgirl fancasts for quite some time and its pretty evident as to why this is the case. She is a phenomenal actress (having taken him the Oscar for best actress for La La Land), she has comic book film experience (The Amazing Spider-Man series) and has the trademark character look. Her role in La La Land validates that she can shine in a physically challenging role and honestly, her and Joss Whedon together seem like an absolute killer duo. Should she feel like taking another crack at the superhero genre, she would be my pick for Batgirl in the DCEU.
Honourable Mentions: Rosario Dawson, Hayley Atwell, Anya Taylor-Joy, Anna Kendrick and Nathalie Emmanuel.
