It’s safe to say the the upcoming DCEU film, The Flash, has had a number of production problems.  The film lost not one, but two directors in the past (Seth Gramme-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa) and is currently getting a page one rewrite from King Arthur: Legend of the Sword scribe, Joby Harold. Fans have been clamoring for an update on where the film stands and now it seems was have one.

According to  Variety‘s Justin Kroll, Matthew Vaughan is in the running for the director job.  Vaughan is a new addition to the rumored directors list for The Flash.  He is best known for directing critically lauded films Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service and its upcoming summer sequel The Golden Circle.  However he may not even the studio’s top choice.

As Kroll writes above, Back to the Future and Forest Gump director, Robert Zemeckis is also being eyed for the job.  Additionally, Umberto Gonzalez of The Wrap states that Zemeckis is the current front runner for the job. Zemeckies reportedly has a new project with Steve Carell that will shoot this fall but sources have said that Warner Bros. will likely wait for him to finish.

Finally, we have another newcomer, Sam Raimi. Details are scarce but The Hollywood Reporter states that the director known for the original Spider-Man trilogy is also being looked at for the job after meeting with Warner Bros.

Personally, I say take this with some grain of salt. Warner Bros. has not commented on these reports yet so as of now, everything is a rumor. That being said, I think any of these three directors would be great for the job. All three infuse a sense of fun and excitement in their films but are also not short on the drama, action and emotion.

Given that The Flash is set for a March 23, 2018 release date, it’s safe to assume that Warner Bros. will push the date back. Lead actor Ezra Miller already has commitments to Warner’s other huge franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The Flash stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash, Billy Curdup as Henry Allen and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West.
