Guy Ritchie might have his first star picked for his upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin. According to The Sun, sources say that Ritchie is looking to have Tom Hardy star as main antagonist Jafar.
“Guy is a huge fan of Tom’s work and securing him would be a major coup. There have been conversations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are subject to change, he’s certainly one of Guy’s favoured choices. It just depends on schedules whether he’ll be able to sign up.”
For now, take this with a grain of salt as Disney and/or Guy Ritchie have not reached out to confirm or deny this rumor. However, should this turn out to be true, it could create quite the controversy. Since Aladdin is set in the Middle East, the casting of Tom Hardy for a lead role is a major step in the wrong direction. Good actor or not, the film should look to be as authentic as possible when showcasing the culture of the setting. This means casting actors who are Arab or are of Arab descent to avoid white-washing.
Aladdin has not been given a release date yet but keep it locked to Talkies Network for more information about the film as it becomes available.
