With Wonder Woman taking the comic book movie world by storm, Marvel is gearing up to release their first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel, which is set to be released in 2019. Brie Larson will lead the cast in the title role while Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have signed on to direct. Now, a new rumor is out and it looks like Brie Larson won’t be the only huge MCU name joining the cast.
According to a tweet from the editor-in-chief of Omega Underworld, Samuel L. Jackson will be co-starring in Captain Marvel. No further details on the rumor have been released. Neither Marvel or Jackson have commented on the rumor. The EIC also stated that the film is expected to start shooting on January 8, 2018.
This rumor is actually not too shocking. Four months ago, Jackson spoke to We Got This Covered about a return to the MCU and said:
“Yeah, I’d love to do a Nick Fury movie. I’m always open and game. But they got Infinity Wars, two movies to do there, and after that there’s Brie [Larson’s] movie Captain Marvel, which maybe [Nick] will be part of. Also, I asked them, so you’re doing Black Panther and the only black character in the Marvel Universe is not showing up? And they’re like, Nick Fury is not in Wakanda! How can he not know the other black superhero on the planet? How the hell does that work? But they just said, no you’re not in that one.”
If the Omega Underground rumor is to be believed, then talks between Jackson and Marvel have obviously gone well. Now, this should still be taken with a grain of salt because, as stated above, there hasn’t been an official comment on the matter. Still, seeing Nick Fury back in a substantial role in the MCU would be great. It would be his first big Marvel role since Captain America: The Winter Solider. Considering that Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is supposedly the most powerful hero in the MCU, it’d be no surprise to see a guy like Nick Fury take an interest in her.
Captain Marvel is well into production but not much is known about the film. Screenwriter Nicole Perlman has stated that the film will be an origin story but with some considerable differences to the comic origin.
Captain Marvel is scheduled to be released in theatres on March 8, 2019
