It’s time to go back to the Wizarding World once more. Warner Bros. has announced that filming has begun on the sequel to the smash hit Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Production has kicked off in the United Kingdom with most the cast from the first film returning for this one. Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Johnny Depp and Ezra Miller will all be returning for the second film.
In addition, Jude Law, Zoe Kravitz and Callum Turner will also be joining the main cast as Albus Dumbledore, Leta Lestrange and Theseus Scamander (Newt’s older brother) respectively.
The cast is rounded out by William Nadylam as a wizard named Yusuf Kama, Ingvar Sigurdsson as a bounty hunter, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the owner of the wizarding circus, Kevin Guthrie as Abernathy, Tina and Queenie’s boss at MACUSA and Claudia Kim as a young woman first introduced as an attraction at a wizarding circus.
Warner Bros. has also released a plot description for the upcoming film.
J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.
The film expands the wizarding world, moving from New York to London and on to Paris. There are also some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of the books and film series.
While this description does give fans a general sense of what’s going to happen in the sequel, it’s still pretty vague. It is unclear as to why Dumbledore thinks that Newt Scamander will be of help in defeating Grindelwald. It is also unclear as to how and why Tina, Quennie and Jacob get pulled back into this growing wizarding war. Honestly, I’m just happy Jacob is back at all. We also know that the sequel will not be titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2. Following the trend of the series that came before it, the sequel will be titled “Fantastic Beasts and…” something else that hasn’t been announced yet.
The untitled Fantastic Beasts sequel is set to be released on November 16, 2018 and will be the second entry in the proposed five-film prequel series.
