By the nature of the title I’m sure fans will be disappointed. Ever since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, the only appearances by the green giant in the MCU have been in supporting roles. Fans have been clamoring for another standalone Hulk film but it seems like that door has been potentially shut for good.
In an interview with Variety, Mark Ruffolo, who plays the massive character, has said that a standalone Hulk film will never happen.
He goes on to say that Universal Studios are the ones who hold the rights to a standalone Hulk feature and “they don’t know how to place nice with Marvel.” He goes on to joke that they don’t want to make money but its Don Cheadle who brings up the funniest and probably biggest point in the interview. Cheadle mentions that because Ruffolo is the Hulk, Universal doesn’t want to make another film. Fans will note that originally, Edward Norton had the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk in the 2008 film before Marvel recast the role for the 2012 blockbuster The Avengers. The split between Norton and Marvel wasn’t too nice either so maybe that’s what turned Universal off from working with them again.
Ruffolo then says while he and Marvel have talked about giving Hulk another film, he just does not see it happening, which Cheadle agreed with. Cheadle comforts Ruffolo afterwards and it makes for some funny banter.
Personally, I don’t know if a Hulk film is even the right move for Marvel. The first film garnered mixed-to-positive reviews and a low box office total which may also be why Marvel has decided against a solo film. While we may never get a Hulk-centric film, fans can check out the character in Thor: Ragnarok which comes on on November 3, 2017
