‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Director Jon Watts Reportedly in Talks to Return For Sequel

Written By: Nick Poulimenakos

The deal between Marvel and Sony that brought Spider-Man into the MCU just keeps paying off. Not only has it raked in the cash, the film has earned critical acclaim for its performances, overall light tone and direction of the film. Marvel was eager to give Tom Holland’s web-slinger a sequel and it looks like they are also looking to bring back another familiar face.

According to a report by  The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Watts is in talks to return to the directors chair for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. They also mention that both Marvel and Sony are eager to keep working with the director. The report does not mention how far a long talks are.

While neither Marvel or Sony have commented on this, it does not come as a surprise. Marvel brought Watts in because they wanted a Spider-Man not yet seen on the silver screen. What we got was arguably the best cinematic Spider-Man yet. Watts’ Homecoming perfectly balances being Peter Parker and Spider-Man and the impact superheroing has on those around you. The blend of a blockbuster Marvel film and a John Hughes-type high school drama was exactly the kind of re-launch Disney was looking for. In addition to this, the film has already earned $117 million at the domestic box office and has a worldwide gross of $468.3 million.

The sequel currently has no title but Marvel is sticking to calling it Homecoming 2 until another title arises. The release date for the film is scheduled for July 5, 2019 and will kick off the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the sequel will be set minutes after Avengers 4.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is in theatres everywhere now.
