Yesterday, we reported that Fox Searchlight was producing a biopic on Lord of the Rings author, J.R.R. Tolkien and Dome Karukoski will helm the movie. Now, we may have our first star for the film.

According to a report by Variety, Nicholas Hoult is in talks to play the famed author. Sources say that Hoult is in early negotiations for the role but is the studio’s top choice.

The script for the film is being written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford and will focus on Tolkien searching for , love, artistic inspiration and friendship among his classmates before the start of WWI. Tolkien was a soldier in the British Armed Forces from 1916-1920 and then wrote two novels while working at Pembroke College.

Tolkien’s novels, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit served as the source material for Peter Jackson’s blockbuster Middle-Earth film franchise that grossed over $5 billion. The novels are among the best selling books in history, having sold more than 150 million copies.

Hoult will next been seen in The Current War as Nikola Tesla and will reprise his role as Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: Dark Phoenix next year.
