Rejoice Star Wars fans! Disney and Lucasfilm have finally found the person who will replace Colin Trevorrow as writer/director of Star Wars: Episode IX and it’s a familiar face. Today, the offical Star Wars site announced that J.J Abrams will be returning to the massive franchise to helm the final film in the sequel trilogy. Lucasfilm’s official statement can be seen below:
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.”
But, that’s not all! In addition to this massive news, Lucasfilm also announced that Abrams will be co-writing the film with the writer of Argo and Justice League, Chris Terrio. The 9th film in the Skywalker saga will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
When the sequel trilogy was announced, Colin Trevorrow was the man set to be behind the camera and was co-writing the project with writing partner, Derek Connolly. However, Lucasfilm eventually brought in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child scribe, Jack Thorne in for a re-write. And then, Trevorrow exited the project and it seems like Connolly and Thorne followed as the film will have a new script from Terrio and Abrams.
Recent rumors had pointed to Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the frontrunner to direct but he’d shut those rumors down this past weekend.
Abrams is best known as the guy who kicked off the Star Wars sequel trilogy with The Force Awakens, which garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing over $2 billion at the global box office. The film was also nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one.
Personally, I could not be more excited for Episode IX. Colin Trevorrow is fine as a director but bringing back Abrams and having him co-write the film with Chris Terrio is just a complete slam dunk. I have no doubt that Abrams will do a fantastic job on Episode IX and will give fans a satisfying ending to the latest chapter in the Skywalker story.
Star Wars: Episode IX is currently scheduled for release on May 24, 2019.
