Finally, after months of speculation, Disney has released the full cast list for Jon Favreau’s upcoming live-action version of The Lion King. Check out the full announcement on Instagram below!
While fans already knew most of the cast, there are still plenty of new faces to behold. The biggest being Beyonce signing on to play Nala, Simba’s love interest and Chiwetel Ejiofor being cast as the main antagonist, Scar. Ejiofor will be taking over the famous role from Jeremy Irons, who fans were hoping would reprise the role but it seems that he is occupied by his DC Extended Universe films for the time being. In addition, Eric Andre, Florence Kasumba and Keegan-Michael Key have been brought in to play Scar’s hyena’s, Azizi, Shenzi and Kamari. Finally, JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph will star as young Simba and Nala respectively.
Do you hear that? That’s fan anticipation going through the roof. Disney has been making a killing remaking their famous animated movies into live-action but the choice to do The Lion King was met with a mixed-to-positive response. Why mess with a project that is so beloved? Some concerns were calmed when Favreau was brought on as director but now, with the star studded cast being announced, fan anticipation can only go up from here.
The Lion King is set to premiere in theatres on July 19, 2019.
