When Disney announced a brand new Star Wars sequel trilogy, one of its biggest mysterious was what Luke has been up to in the thirty years since Return of the Jedi. We know he started a new Jedi Order but Kylo Ren burned it to the ground and Luke entered a self imposed exile. Fast forward to The Force Awakens and we find Luke alone, on a island where Rey presents him with his long lost lightsaber.
Now, based on the various trailers and marketing for The Last Jedi, many fans are theorizing that Luke might have turned to the darkside, given everything that has happened to him. Mark Hamil however, who plays Luke Skywalker, disagrees.
In an interview with Disney Insider Magazine, Hamil puts the theories to rest and denies that Luke has turned to the side of the force he swore to defeat:
“In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn’t gone to the dark side. This isn’t an evil version of him. But it’s still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It’s a real challenge.”
Haunted by his failure to save the young Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) from being seduced to the darkside, Luke seems to have given up all hope in the Jedi and in himself. This leads to him going into hiding as he never wants to experience what he went through with his nephew again.
What’s interesting about Hamil’s comments is how Luke pulls Hamil out of his comfort zone in this film. While he’s not evil, this will definitely not be the Luke we saw back in the 70’s and 80’s. This is a broken, angrier version of our Jedi hero. The Last Jedi has already teased that it will shake the foundation of the force as we know it. No longer is it simply about the darkness and the light. Luke tried to guide Ben to the light but he was consumed by Snoke and the darkside. Will Luke teach Rey about the balance of the force? It is possible for a Jedi to use both sides of the force in a quest of good? We’ll just have to wait an see…
