Sony’s Venom film has been shrouded in mystery but finally, we can confirm the source material that the film will aim to adapt.
During Sony’s Comic Con Experience 2017 panel in Sao Paulo Brazil, Tom Hardy, who plays Eddie Brock/Venom, confirmed in a pre-recorded video, that the film will be inspired by the Marvel comic: Venom: Lethal Protector.
The six-issue miniseries was written by David Michelinie and drawn by Mark Bagley, Ron Lim, and Sam Delarosa and began with a truce between Spider-Man and Venom. Venom agrees to move to San Francisco, which was also confirmed by Hardy to be the setting for the film.
Once there, Venom is attacked by the son of one of his past victims and is hunted by the Life Foundation. The foundation wants to study the Venom symbiote and use it for their own purposes. The result? Five new symbiote spawn: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.
In the context of the film, it is being speculated that the Life Foundation will instead be used as the film origin for Venom’s archenemy, Carnage, rumored to be played by Riz Ahmed. The lethal symbiote spawn attaches itself to Cletus Kasady and wreaks havoc upon anything in front of it.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Venom is set to be the first installment in Sony’s Marvel Universe that will also include a Silver Sable and Black Cat film and a Morbius movie.
Venom fights its way into theatres on October 5, 2018.
