Say goodbye to 2017 and hello to an obscene amount of movies being released in 2018! Seriously though, 2018 is set to be one of the biggest years in cinematic history. The Marvel Cinematic Universe builds to its highly anticipated climax while The Incredibles finally gets its long awaited sequel and on top of all that, a new batch of Oscar-worthy films will grace the silver screen. This leads us to the list you see here today. Down below, you will see fifteen movies that the Talkies Network team cannot wait to see. The ones that get us more excited than ever. From anthology Star Wars films to Black Panther finally getting his own solo movie, here is Talkies Network’s picks for the fifteen most anticipated films of 2018!
15. Solo: A Star Wars Story
When I wrote this list for 2017, I said that Star Wars films would probably be topping the list for years to come. Unfortunately I was wrong but that doesn’t mean that Han Solo getting his own film is not exciting on its own. A film that is filled with behind-the-scenes problems, extensive reshoots but an incredible cast, Solo: A Star Wars Story is a film that has fans cautiously optimistic. With Ron Howard at the helm, the film is set to tell the story of Han Solo, before he met Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The movie has all the makings to be a success, so let’s hope that its backstage problems did not get in the way of a potentially great origin film.
14. Mary Poppins Returns
Sometimes, sequels for hit films won’t come for five, ten, even twenty years. Mary Poppins Returns comes a full 54 years after its predecessor and I’m still excited as ever. Emily Blunt stars as the titular character and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) is cast as the apprentice of Dick Van Dyke’s character from the first film. Taking place twenty years later, Mary Poppins Returns see’s Poppins return to the Banks household to take part in a whole new magical adventure. If that doesn’t get you excited, Ben Winshaw, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth, Dick Van Dyke, Julie Walters and Meryl Streep round out the main cast.
13. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Sony may have allowed Marvel to use Peter Parker in their live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that does not mean that the company will not want to produce a project of their own surrounding a webbed-hero. Debuting in the pages of Marvel Comics in 2011, Miles Morales quickly became an instant hit amongst fans. Assuming the identity of Spider-Man after Peter Parker dies, Morales will make his big screen debut in this animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film will follow Miles hopping across the multiverse, interacting with various Spider-Man’s from various Marvel Comics worlds. Sony may have had varying success with Marvel’s flagship hero, but with Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch along with Phil Lord and Chris Miller writing the script for the film and securing an ensemble cast, Into the Spider-Verse is shaping up to be one of 2018’s biggest surprises.
12. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Not much is known about X-Men: Dark Phoenix other than the comic book it will take inspiration from. The next entry in the main X-Men series finds Jean Grey becoming the villainous Dark Phoenix, a force that threatens the entire world. In this new X-Men timeline, Fox has experienced two critically acclaimed films and one that received mixed reviews. Dark Phoenix looks to be a return to form for the franchise, with director Simon Kinberg promising a worthy adaptation of its classic source material. With Sophie Turner saying the film “revolutionizes” the superhero genre and Jessica Chastain being cast as the film’s main villain, X-Men: Dark Phoenix has fans more excited than ever for the X-Men franchise.
11. First Man
Damien Chazelle makes his return to the cinema with First Man, a biopic of Neil Armstrong that chronicles the famous astronauts life during the years leading up to his small step on Earth’s moon. Ryan Gosling reunites with the La La Land director to star as Armstrong with Claire Foy, Corey Stoll, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke and Jon Bernthal rounding out the main cast. It’s a story that surprisingly hasn’t been told yet on the big screen but if anyone could successfully do it, it is Damien Chazelle, who continues to build an impressive film resume.
10. Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck it Ralph 2
Wreck It Ralph is a film that doesn’t necessarily need a sequel but if it got one, it would still fans incredibly excited. Well, here we are. Ralph Breaks the Internet will take out favourite video game villain turned medal-wearing hero away from the gaming world and into the internet. Along with Sarah Silverman’s Vanellope von Schweetz, the duo must find a replacement part to fix Sugar Rush and during the journey, they will encounter many famous characters including every single Disney Princess. Not much else is known but this sequel is slowly but surely becoming one of the most anticipated animated features of the upcoming year.
9. The New Mutants
A few years ago, I would have called you crazy if you had told me that we would be getting a superhero horror film. Now, in 2018, FOX is continuing its trend of pushing the superhero genre boundary with The New Mutants. FOX has been turning things around for the X-Men franchise with films like Deadpool and Logan being both critical and commercial successes. But The New Mutants looks to be something entirely different. Showcasing an entirely new set of teenage mutants, viewers will watch as the mutants discover the powers while being held against their will at a secret facility. If that wasn’t enough, the film is taking inspiration from the iconic Demon Bear comic storyline and this alone proves that FOX is set to once again do wonders with another X-Men property.
8. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
The Wizarding World returns in a big way two years ago with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and J.K Rowling isn’t slowing down. Both she and director David Yates return for this highly anticipated sequel The Crimes of Grindelwald. The story follows Newt Scamander as he is called upon by Albus Dumbledore to assist in the battle against Grindelwald and his band of fanatics. Almost the entire main cast from the first film returns as well as James Newton Howard returning to compose the score and with the series building towards the legendary Dumbledore/Grindelwald wizarding duel, there’s a lot to be excited about.
7. Ready Player One
Steven Spielberg alone earns this film a spot on this list but the source material the film is based off of is nothing short of one of the best novels in recent memory. Ready Player One is a story filled with pop culture nostalgia and sci-fi/adventure fun as Wade Watts, a young man living in the slums of Columbus, Ohio, takes part in the online world of OASIS. This is where people go to in an attempt to have some kind of virtual life as the planet has becoming ruined beyond repair. Now, thanks to the deceased creator of the OASIS, Wade has a chance to become the controller and owner of the online world, if he can find the creator’s three Easter eggs. It is as if all your favourite superheroes, video game characters and cinematic favourites came together for one giant film that looks to have impressive visuals and complex characters and we are incredibly excited to see Spielberg bring this vision to life.
6. A Wrinkle in Time
Easily one of the most visually mesmerizing entries on this list, Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time aims to bring moviegoers on a journey across space and time. Examining the nature of good vs evil and how love can triumph anything, the film is set to become the biggest-budget live-action feature to be directed by a woman of colour. Additionally, it features a racially diverse, female driven cast, earning the film some well-deserved buzz ahead of its March release date. This aside, from the trailers alone, the film looks incredibly exciting, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Oprah Winfrey and Chris Pine, stunning visuals and impactful themes, making A Wrinkle in Time another expected success for Disney.
5. Deadpool 2
It may have taken years for FOX to greenlight the original Deadpool film but it only took a few months after release to secure the sequel. Ryan Reynolds returns to the role he was born to play with Deadpool 2. The sequel sees the Merc with a Mouth teaming up with Zazie Beatz’s Domino and Josh Brolin’s Cable for an all new stupidly-fun adventure that most likely includes more hijinks, more fourth-wall breaking and an obscene amount of swearing. The movie will also look to not only set up Deadpool 3, but the much looked-forward to X-Force film. The future is bright for the X-Men franchise, let’s all just hope that Disney does not do much to change the current film lineup.
4. Black Panther
2018 is definitely Marvel’s year. While Captain America strives for liberty and justice and Tony Stark looks to technology and pride to save the day, T’Challa aka. Black Panther is above all this. As the King of Wakanda, T’Challa is a hero of the people. A man that is looked at as a monarch, superhero and protector of his nation. Fans will not have to wait much longer for Black Panther’s solo film as the first MCU film of the year will premiere next month. The film will follow T’Challa as he accepts his new role as King of Wakanda. However, when enemies from the past remerge, the Black Panther will have to fight not only for his people but for the fate of the entire world. This is a film that fans have longed for and finally got a taste when Black Panther debuted in Captain America: Civil War. Now, Black Panther looks to put the hero at the forefront, and if the trailers prove anything, it is that we are in for the most diverse, unique and exciting Marvel film yet.
Marvel may have a stronghold on 2018, but DC looks to continue its own franchise with Aquaman, The next entry in the DC Extended Universe see’s Jason Momoa’s Aquaman return to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis to claim the throne that is rightfully his, even if he is unsure if he wants it. Momoa was the show-stealer in last year’s Justice League and despite the film’s problems, Momoa thrived in every scene he was in. With James Wan at the helm and a star studded cast that includes Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe, Aquaman is set to get the DCEU back on track once again. It is a shame however that Aquaman is the only DC film we are getting in 2018 but, quality of quantity right?
2. The Incredibles 2
The Incredibles is my favourite animated film ever. So you can be sure that when this film debuts this summer, I’ll be first in line to buy my ticket. Finally, after 14 long years, the superhero family make their triumphant return to the silver screen with The Incredibles 2. Things have changed now as Helen Parr aka Elastagirl will take centre stage here, leaving Mr. Incredible at home to deal with his kids’ normal life and Jack-Jack’s still unknown powers. The main cast, including Samuel L. Jackson return here along with Brad Bird as writer/director and if this film is anything like the first, it means that we are in-store for one of the greatest superhero sequels ever produced. Now, to end this like a typical fan… HONEY, WHERE’S MY SUPER SUIT!?
1. Avengers: Infinity War
It was obvious, right? A film, literally ten years in the making, Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since Joss Whedon teased Marvel’s biggest villain, Thanos, at the end of his film, The Avengers, every film that followed was another step towards his dreaded arrival on Earth. Featuring the biggest cast the MCU has ever seen, Infinity War sees Thanos reaching Earth, seeking the mysterious Infinity Stones. To stop him, The Avengers, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy must unite to take on their most formidable foe yet. If that doesn’t get your blood pumping I don’t know what will. All roads have led to this and Avengers: Infinity War is our pick for the most anticipated film of 2018.
Honourable Mentions: Oceans 8, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Sicario 2: Soldado, Mary Queen of Scots & The Predator
