Back in 2013, Bong Joon Ho surprised the cinematic industry with his fantastic adaptation of the comic book Snowpiercer. Starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, the film garnered critical acclaim and was a commercial success. Now, the franchise with the most dangerous train ride is heading down a different route.

Wednesday morning saw TNT announce that they had ordered a Snowpiercer TV series. The announcement comes more than a year after the initial pilot order.

The film was originally based on the graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, and tells the story of a dystopian future where all remaining citizens live on a speeding train. The cars are divided up based on social classes, eventually causing an revolution from those in the back of the train.

TNT’s adaptation of the narrative will star Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connolly. Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles) has signed on as showrunner.

Sarah Aubrey, exec vp original programming at TNT had this to say in a statement:

“I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon Ho’s epic film and jumped at the chance to honor his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast. Science fiction is the perfect genre to examine issues of race, class, gender and natural resources with thought-provoking and exciting storytelling. Snowpiercer will explore those relevant issues while embarking on a wild, action-filled ride.”

No production or release date has been announced for the series.
