2016’s Suicide Squad was an incredibly divisive film that experienced wide commercial success but garnered mainly negative reviews. This did not stop Warner Bros. from wanting to continue the villain-centirc film series as a sequel was quickly ordered not long after. Gavin O’Connor is on board to write and direct the sequel and now, a new report claims that the original film’s main stars are lined up to return.
In an exclusive report by Variety, Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie will return for Suicide Squad 2, reprising their roles as Deadshot, The Joker and Harley Quinn respectively.
Reports have been circulating that both Smith and Robbie were poised to return but the inclusion of Leto is what fans have truly been waiting for. Since Suicide Squad‘s premiere, Margot Robbie has continually teased her return as the maniacal Batman villain but never revealed whether it was for Suicide Squad 2 or one of her “in development” Harley Quinn spinoff projects, which include a Joker/Harley “verses” film and a Gotham City Sirens movie that is being developed by David Ayer. Leto on the other hand has been quiet on the matter.
The Joker in Suicide Squad was one of the most talked about aspects, with fan opinions ranging from fantastic to a total disaster of a performance. David Ayer even said that he messed up Joker’s role in the film, and that the Clown Prince of Crime should have been the main villain. If this report turns out to be true, we should expect to see Leto’s Joker have a more enticing role in the sequel.
In addition, the report also states that Michael De Luca (Moneyball, The Social Network) has been brought in as a producer on the film. This comes from Warner Bros. looking to restructure the look of its DC Universe, including the arrangement of executives in charge of each DCEU entry. The addition of De Luca seems to signal that the studio would prefer having a central figure focused on a single project rather then having one individual oversee several films.
Anticipating a fall production start date, Variety states that Suicide Squad 2 is a top priority for the studio along with New Line’s Shazam! which is one of the next entries in the DCEU.
