Today, Guy Ritchie’s version on the famous Disney Arabian tale, Aladdin, has officially wrapped after a six month shoot. Mena Massoud, who plays Aladdin in the film, revealed the news on twitter. Check it out below!
In addition to Massoud, the rest of the cast includes; Will Smith (Genie), Naomi Scott (Jasmine), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), Navid Negahban (Sultan), and Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders.
The film has experienced a couple of run-ins with controversy. Fans were taken by surprise when Scott was announced as Jasmine, considering the fact that she is known to be an Arab/Persian princess. The name itself even has Persian origins. More controversy was garnered when Prince Ahmed, a character from the animated film was reported to be replaced by a white Prince Anders who would be played by Magnusson. Disney did not respond to either controversy. News then broke that background actors were being tanned on set, but Disney explained that the actions made were only for specific individuals (stunt performers).
Aladdin has not gained the kind of traction that other live action adaptations have experienced such as The Lion King or Mulan. However, when a trailer or first looks are debut online, we will get a clearer understanding on if the film will be a hit or miss with fans of the animated version.
Aladdin flies into theatres May 24th 2019.
