A deal with Disney may bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point but until that goes through, Fox will continue on with business as usual and it seems like yet another X-Men film is on the way from two long-time veterans of the franchise.
First reported by Deadline, 20th Century Fox has hired Brian Michael Bendis, a longtime Marvel Comics writer who recently left for DC Comics, to pen the script for Deadpool director Tim Miller’s mysterious X-Men spinoff film. Not much is known about the project but it has been given a working title: 143.
We reported here that Miller was reportedly working on a Kitty Pryde solo film and according to The Hollywood Reporter, sources are saying that it is in fact a Kitty Pryde film that Bendis is currently working on.
The film would mark Miller’s return to the X-Men franchise after bringing the Merc with the Mouth to the big screen with Ryan Reynolds. The director left Deadpool 2 early on in pre-production after creative differences, and was replaced by John Wick and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch.
The project’s code name (143) is apparently a reference to Uncanny X-Men No. 143, one of the first Kitty Pryde stories and her first solo adventure in which she faces a demon alone in the X-Mansion. The issue, written by her creators Chris Claremont and John Byrne, was published in 1981.
