‘Lego Ninjago Movie’ Director Charlie Bean To Helm Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lady and the Tramp’

It looks like Disney’s trend of remaking classic animated films into live-action features will continue as the studio has announced its next remake along with a director and writer.

In an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter, Charlie Bean, who directed The Lego Ninjago Movie, has closed a deal to helm the live-action/CG hybrid remake of Disney’s animated classic, Lady and the Tramp.

Brigham Taylor, who worked on Disney remake of The Jungle Book, is producing the project, which is looking to debut on Disney’s digital streaming service that will launch in 2019 instead of a theatrical release.

The recently announced streaming service will have four to six movies a year in addition to content that will include film and TV offerings from Disney brands Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars.

This is a clear sign that Disney is taking this streaming service incredibly seriously. The fact that a remake of such a marquee and essential Disney title such as Lady and the Tramp will make its way to the small screen instead of the big screen proves that Disney is looking to make a statement during this new wave of media consumption.

Released in 1955, The Lady and the Tramp, follows the love story between a pampered Cocker Spaniel named Lady and a streetwise mongrel named Tramp. Lady finds herself out on the street after her owners have a baby and is saved from a pack by Tramp, who tries to show her to live her life footloose and collar-free.

The film is also known for its iconic set-piece featuring a candlelit spaghetti dinner in an alley while two human cooks sing and play “Bella Notte.” It is considered one of the most recognizable scenes in Disney and movie history.

Additionally, Andrew Bujalski penned the script for the remake while Jessica Virtue and Chaz Salembier are overseeing for Disney.
