As Disney continues to forge a new product line of remaking classic animated films, Mulan looks to finally create the perfect cast as Donnie Yen has signed on to co-star opposite Chinese actress Liu Yifei, who will star as the titular heroine.
In an exclusive report by Deadline, Donnie Yen has been set to star in Mulan, the live action remake that Disney is basing on its classic musical-animated film. Yen will play Commander Tung, a mentor and teacher to Mulan. Tung is not a character from the original film but given the fact that he will be a mentor to Mulan, one can assume that his character will be based off Li Shang, the military character who trains Mulan.
The studio’s emphasis on live-action reboots follows the successes of Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and, most recently, Beauty and the Beast, which was one 2017’s biggest box successes. The studio is now shooting Dumbo, with Tim Burton directing and Colin Farrell starring.
Niki Caro is directing, and Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner are producing the movie. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the team behind Rise & Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as well as the Avatar sequels, came on board in 2015 to rewrite the screenplay by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin.
This will be Yen’s second big budget Disney outing, after he costarred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Mulan is set to be released on March 27, 2020.
