Ranking all the ‘God of War’ Games
Written by: Artur Galvao
With a new God of War game being released on April 20th of 2018, and early reviews giving it a perfect or nearly perfect score, I though it appropriate to know how it compares with its predecessors. Therefore, I will be ranking all God of War games that have been released. The new game will not be featured on this list, but if IGN are correct with their score of a perfect 10, then the new game would be ranked first. But since I haven’t had the chance to play the game yet, it will not appear in this list.
- God of War: Ascension
Ascension is an enjoyable game, but one that does not live to the pedigree of its predecessors. The narrative promised a more emotional side of Kratos, but it feels as the its just stumbling along with major plot points feeling incidental. The combat is just as good as always been, just more refined. However, there is lack of memorable set-pieces, along with a tiresome reliance of carbon copies of wavs of the exactly the same enemy, giving the game a sense of mediocrity. As a result, this game is forgettable and is in fact the weakest in the series.
- God of War 3
God of War III is a great end to Kratos’ console trilogy. It’s not perfect, with some uneven storytelling and progression here and there, but it’s still a fantastic overall package. The combat is stellar once again, it’s bloodier than ever, and it is at times the best-looking game ever released. I still think God of War II is the best in the trilogy, but Sony Santa Monica did a great job closing up Kratos’ journey for revenge.
- God of War: Chain of Olympus
Chain of Olympus was a stellar achievement on the PSP. It plays perfectly into the franchise’s storyline, as well as, offering the same level of intensity as its console counterparts. Engaging from start to finish and could be featured higher because these next 4 places are interchangeable.
- God of War: Ghost of Sparta
Unbelievably, the developers at Ready at Dawn managed to top what they did with Chains of Olympus, delivering a longer, deeper, and more graphically beautiful game than even they thought was originally possible. Ghost of Sparta is, without a doubt, one of the best games available for the PSP.
- God of War 2
God of War II may in fact be the best action game ever made. It outdoes the original God of War in every way, even if only by a tiny bit as the first was so good to begin with. It’s an evolutionary step rather than a revolutionary leap, but it has basically perfected the formula that the original set up.
- God of War
Attempting to summarize God of War in this little space also feels like it’d be an injustice, so I’ll try my best. This game is one not only is one the best action games released but one of the best games of all time. One in which spawned new wave of hack and slash games and its legacy that has lasted this long and will keeping living on.
