Rumor: The Penguin Might be the Main Villain in Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’

After a long period of silence, rumblings of the DCEU’s standalone Batman feature, which will be directed by War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves, have begun to surface once again. This time, a rumor might point to who the main villain of the film will be.

Variety’s Justin Kroll tweeted today that DC and Warner Bros. are looking to have The Penguin be the main villain in Reeves’ film. Unless Reeves decides to go another route, this might be the plan for now. Check out the tweet below:

Now, like Kroll says, take this with a grain of salt for now. It is interesting that Penguin would be the main villain of the film for a number of reasons. First, rumors of Penguin’s DCEU have run ramped for months now, with actor Josh Gad teasing numerous times on Twitter that he might actually be in the running for the role. Second, as many DC fans know, Joe Manganiello Deathstroke was actually supposed to be he big bad that goes up again Ben Affleck’s incarnation of the caped crusader. Now, it seems like those plans have finally been shut down, with Deathstroke apparently getting his own solo film as well as teaming up with Lex Luthor to take on the Justice League in a future film.

What’s even more interesting however is the fact that Penguin might apparently appear in Birds of Prey as the main villain. Kroll made note that, of the multiple scripts the film has, Penguin is the main antagonist in one of them, which would be quite weird considering that film, set to be helmed by Cathy Yen, has Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn attached. Unless she is set to join the Birds of Prey instead of fight against them, it would take this rumor with an even bigger grain of salt.

Whatever the case may be, add this to the long running list of DCEU rumors that Warner Bros. has yet to confirm. With Ben Affleck’s future as the character still apparently up in the air, it would be nice if Warner Bros. offered some kind of dialogue on the matter. At least we know that Reeves is hard at work on the highly anticipated film.
