Jared Leto’s Joker Is Reportedly Getting His Own Solo Movie

Well… here we go again with DC and their film universe. The DCEU has been largely surrounded by unknown aspects, with films seemingly being announced or rumored left right and centre. The latest report? Apparently, Jared Leto’s Joker is getting his own solo film.

The report comes from Variety, who say that insiders have told them Warner Bros. is looking to expand on Jared Leto’s version of the Joker, which debuted in 2016’s Suicide Squad, with a movie of his own. Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from Suicide Squad.

Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but the studio’s idea is to expand on the world created by Suicide Squad and tie into future installments of that property. Warner Bros. already announced that Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn would be getting her own movie with a Birds of Prey film, and the next goal was setting up a film for Leto’s Joker.

When Warner Bros. announced last fall that it was developing a Joker origin story from Todd Phillips and executive produced by Martin Scorcese, the studio emphasized that this did not mean the end for Leto’s Joker. Rather, Phillips’ film would fall under a new origins banner that would be separate from the current cinematic DC universe (rumored to be DC Elseworlds). This new banner would allow multiple actors and versions based on the same character with no overlap, and WB has reportedly tapped Joaquin Phoenix to star in Phillips’ Joker feature.

Leto’s Joker, as fans will note, was almost a glorified cameo in Suicide Squad despite being advertised as one of the film’s main stars. The Oscar-winner had made it clear following the film’s release that he hoped to expand on the character in future films in a more substantive, if not starring, role. Considering Leto is also reportedly tapped to appear in Suicide Squad 2, a duo film with Harley Quinn and apparently the Gotham City Sirens film, it looks like Warner Bros. is very keen on keeping him in the role despite the polarizing response to the character. Should he get his own film, maybe Ben Affleck appears in a supporting role as well? We’ll just have to wait and see…

Keep it locked on Talkies Network for all the latest surrounding this newest DCEU film.
