Netflix on Tuesday announced that Orange Is the New Black Season 6 will be released on Friday, July 27. It will be the dramedy’s latest summer premiere date since Season 1, which dropped on July 11 in 2013. All subsequent seasons have dropped in June.
The 20 second teaser accompanying the announcement gives viewers a glimpse of post-riot Litchfield, and it’s nothing but destroyed windows and broken lights. “This is a whole new world,” we hear an inmate say, and the slow pan across Litchfield’s trashed cafeteria makes it clear that Season 6 will indeed be uncharted territory.
Season 5 took place in real time over the course of three riot-filled days at Litchfield Prison and concluded with a number of the inmates — including Piper (Taylor Schilling), Crazy Eyes (two-time Emmy winner Uzo Aduba) and Red (Kate Mulgrew) — awaiting their fate as officers in full battle gear confront them. The large ensemble cast also includes Danielle Brooks, Selenis Leyva, Adrienne C. Moore, Laura Prepon, Natasha Lyonne and Nick Sandow.
Netflix signed series creator Jenji Kohan to an exclusive multi-year deal in November. She also created the streamer’s 1980s-set female pro wrestling series GLOW, along with Showtime’s Weeds. She executive produces the series, which helped put Netflix on the original-series map and continues to be one of its most popular shows.
