Rumor: Ewan McGregor Returning As Obi-Wan Kenobi For ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

Before I go on, take all of this with a grain of salt. Normally I will not report rumors like this but this one is too exciting to not at least consider. Fans of the Star Wars prequel trilogy should maybe start celebrating as a new rumor from The Sun has just emerged saying that Ewan McGregor might reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the upcoming Episode IX film. McGregor played the Jedi Knight in the prequel trilogy directed by George Lucas, which consisted of The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005).

The still-untitled Episode IX will be a direct sequel to The Last Jedi and the concluding episode in the newest trilogy of Star Wars saga films. Directed by J.J. Abrams (who also directed The Force Awakens and is co-writing the sequel with Chris Terrio), the film will follow up on the war between the Resistance and the First Order. Bringing McGregor into the story should not be difficult, as just last year the Force ghost of Yoda appeared alongside Mark Hammil in The Last Jedi.

While the prequels as a whole were met with a mixed response from critics and fans, McGregor’s portryal of the famous Jedi was met with universal acclaim. This has led to a big online push for an Obi-Wan solo film, set before the events of the original Star Wars, A New Hope but now that Disney has taken a step back on those plans, McGregor could be lining up a new journey in the Star Wars galaxy.

Seeing the force ghost of Obi-Wan again would be an amazing sight and would tie into why Rey heard Obi-Wan’s voice during her vision in The Force Awakens. For now, remain optimistically cautious about this new rumor.
