Some new plot details for the upcoming Birds of Prey movie have been revealed and in them, a villain has been named: According to a new report from The Wrap, Black Mask will be making his big-screen debut as the villain in Birds of Prey.
The film stars DC characters Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya, Cassandra Cain, and Harley Quinn and is expected to begin filming in January 2019. Birds of Prey has a much smaller budget than most other DC films and is expected to be rated R.
The only plot synopsis comes from the Discussing Film website which reads:
“After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes – Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya – come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord.”
This will be the first live-action rendition of the Black Mask. The character has been featured in various animated media like the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood, and the Arkham video game franchise.
There’s been no news on casting, but it’s believed that Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn.
Birds of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan and produced by Margot Robbie as well as Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless. If Yan stays behind the project, she’ll become the third female filmmaker to join the DC Universe behind Patty Jenkins and Ava DuVernay.
