Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar Game’s first new release since 2013, and the pre-sequel to Red Dead Redemption which was released 8 years ago. Fans have been hungry for a new release, and finally after 5 years, Rockstar has debuted new gameplay from the upcoming release. Here is recap of the trailer.
The game is set at the turn of the 19th century, before the events of the original Red Dead. The player character Arthur Morgan is a member of the Van der Linde Gang before they split. The gang travels from town to town and sets up camp where the main interactions between members takes place. By building the relationships between members of the gang, new activities and opportunities arise.
There are also new NPC interactions within the world. The player can make friends or foes of many characters based on the actions they take. Presumably these actions could have a long term effect in the areas they happen, such as killing a sheriff might make a town lawless or invite more forces to protect it.
The overworld shown in the trailer looks impressive, with multiple ecosystems such as forests, mountains, swamps, desserts, and urban centers taking center stage. Each ecosystem is inhabited by predators and prey, with the hunting and trading system also coming back. If it is like the original, the player can hunt different game for different pelts, as well as nourishment, and trade them for new gear and weapons.
There appears to be an array of weapons shown thus far, and more will be in the game. The shooting mechanics seem to be an improved version of the Grand Theft Auto V system. The reload animations look quite impressive, and there is a distinct one for every weapon. The hand to hand combat system also looks revamped, appearing to be much more fluid than previous Rockstar games.
There is also a system in place to establish relationships with the horse you ride. The bond you build with the horse and how you treat it affect the control of the horse. Different breeds do certain tasks that other breeds don’t do. As the rumour mill churns, there may also be special horses such as the horses from Undead Nightmare returning as well.
With this 6 minute trailer being released, and more gameplay reveals promised, the excitement for this game continues to grow. Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released on October 26, 2018 for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
