Henry Cavill Reportedly Out as Superman Amid DC Film Universe Shake-Up

The DC cinematic universe appears to be losing a key piece in it’s

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Cavill, who has played Superman in three films, is parting ways with Warner Bros.

Neither side has confirmed the news of Cavill’s departure but it’s known that Warner Bros. has been trying to enlist Cavill for a Superman cameo in Shazam! and contract talks between Cavill’s WME reps and Warner Bros. have broken down only recently.

The cause of this is said to be because the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which features a heroine and a storyline that occurs when Superman would only be an infant.

The Shazam! deal is believed to have fallen apart because of scheduling conflicts, according to a Warner Bros. source. With Cavill recently signing on to star in the Netflix series The Witcher, a conflict with scheduling would make alot of sense.

A source from Warner Bros. said that “Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors.” Another source said the studio is trying to hit a “reset” button with the DC universe.

Cavill would be the second actor to retire his role, following Ben Affleck who’s also on his way out of his role as Batman. Although Cavill and Affleck may be leaving, the rest of the Justice League is still set to continue in their roles. Gal Gadot is returning for Wonder Woman 1984, which will be released in November of 2019. Jason Momoa will lead in the Aquaman movie this December. And Ezra Miller remains on board to star in a Flash movie, which is due to shoot in early 2019.
