Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have just gotten closer to assembling its team of female superheroes that will join Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the upcoming Birds of Prey.
Earlier today, Variety reported that a source informed them that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell have been approached to join Robbie in the comic-book spinoff. Mary Elizabeth Winstead would be playing Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell would be portraying Black Canary.
Winstead’s recently garnered some attention for her critically acclaimed performance in the FX series Fargo and Smollett-Bell is best known for her roles on television shows True Blood and Underground. Winstead has just finished wrapped Gemini Man, in which she stars opposite Will Smith, and Smollett-Bell recently landed a role in J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele’s upcoming HBO series Lovecraft Country.
In the film, the team, which consists of Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress, and Gotham police detective Renee Montoya, will take on crime lord Black Mask. The Birds of Prey iteration of Huntress describes her as a former mafia princess who turns into a vigilante after her family is killed in a mob hit. Black Canary is described as a good-natured and idealistic streetfighter.
Cathy Yan is directing the film, which is set to be released on Feb. 7, 2020.
