Barbie is finding a new studio lot for her Malibu Dream Home.
After being stuck in development hell for years at Sony, Mattel is partnering with Warner Bros. for a feature film based on their popular doll with Margot Robbie reportedly in talks to star as the titular character.
The film was first announced in 2014 that Mattel was partnering with Sony for a Barbie movie. 2016 saw Amy Schumer announcing that she would star in the movie that was billed flipping the classic Barbie mythology on its head, putting a modern spin on the toy with an emphasis on feminism and identity.
A few months later Schumer dropped out of the project citing “scheduling conflicts.”
It was later announced Anne Hathaway would replace Amy Schumer with the movie eyeing a June 29, 2018 release that was pushed to August, but at the beginning of the year Sony pushed the movie to May 8, 2020.
The Barbie doll is a global brand powerhouse, with sales of over $3 billion worldwide. Barbie has taken on more than 150 roles through her 50+ years, including princess, president, mermaid, and movie star.
