Box Office Report: ‘Venom’ Continues its Dominance with Massive $111 Million Opening in China

Venom continues to surprise the movie industry as it just raked in a massive $111 million from its opening in China this weekend.

That ranks as the second biggest opening ever for a superhero film in that territory, behind Avengers: Infinity War. Its debut in the Middle Kingdom propelled its total box office haul to $673.5 million worldwide, including $467 million internationally. This means that Venom has now passed Logan, Justice League and Ant-Man and The Wasp at the global box office. Though its impressive run in the U.S. is largely coming to a close, the film is expected to hit $700 million when it formally wraps up its theatrical run overseas.

On the other hand, Sony’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web, starring Claire Foy, opened to a disappointing $8 million from 2,929 locations. The debut is what many are calling a fatal blow to Sony’s attempt to reboot The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series.

Illumination and Universal’s The Grinch launched with $12.7 million globally. Along with its $66 million bow in North America, the adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss holiday tale brought in a sizeable $78.7 million. Ireland and the United Kingdom saw the biggest debut with $6.5 million, followed by Brazil with $1.3 million.

Finally, Paramount’s Overlord grossed $9.2 million when it opened in 52 international markets. After its $10 million opening in North America, the war horror film produced by J. J. Abrams has brought in a total of 19.2 million.
