Dear Evan Hansen is getting the movie treatment!
The Tony-winning musical, that took Broadway by storm last season, is on its way to the big screen as Universal has acquired the film rights to the musical. Stephen Chbosky, the director behind family film Wonder, is in early negotiations to direct. Steven Levenson is penning the script, having already written the book for the original broadway show.
Insiders have indicated that Ben Platt, who originated the role and won a Tony for his performance, is in early talks to step back into his signature blue-striped shirt and arm cast for the movie
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the duo behind the music for Fox’s The Greatest Showman and who won an Oscar for their song “City of Stars” from La La Land, are behind the music and lyrics.
The Broadway production opened at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016 and has been playing to capacity houses ever since, grossing $159.5 million to date.
Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are producing the film adaptation through Marc Platt Productions, while Pasek, Levenson and Paul will excuitive produce.
