Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War was full of major surprises for fans of the entire 10-year run of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. Perhaps one of the most exciting moments involves a surprise appearance from Red Skull after his mysterious disappearance in Captain America: The First Avenger. Ross Marquand of The Walking Dead fame fulfilled the role as Red Skull but it was Hugo Weaving who first filled the shoes of the famed Marvel villain.
Weaving has said in the past that he was not keen to return to the role but that did not stop the Russo Brothers from asking him apparently.
During a Q&A for the film following a special screening held by Collider, the Russo Brothers confirmed to the packed audience that Weaving was asked to reprise his role as Red Skull before Marquand came in:
Hugo Weaving was asked to return to reprise Red Skull, that’s all the Russo Brothers would say. The Soul stone was the last stone in writing for them to come up with.

Despite Weaving’s absence, Red Skull’s appearance in Infinity War was praised with some calling it one of the best cameos in the MCU. Marquand as well received praise for the small but meaningful role.
