Matt Smith to Join Jared Leto in Marvel Spinoff ‘Morbius’

Variety has reported that Matt Smith is in final talks to join Jared Leto in the upcoming Marvel film Morbius, based on the Spider-Man villain of the same name.

Daniel Espinosa, director of the sci-fi thriller Life, is set to direct the movie, with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the team behind Netflix’s Lost in Space remake, penning the script. Avi Arad, Lucas Foster, and Matt Tolmach will be producing.

Morbius is a character that was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane. The character first appeared in 1971 in “The Amazing Spiderman #101.” In the comics, Morbius is a scientist who attempted to cure himself of a rare blood disease but ended up turning himself into a vampire, gaining super strength and fangs. Morbius would continue to have occasional run-ins with Spider-Man until he eventually became a hero himself.

Exact details of who Smith would play are unknown at this time but it will be a major role in the film. Since Leto has already been cast Dr. Michael Morbius, it’s possible that Smith may play an antagonist.

Smith recently finished production on the latest Star Wars film, in what has been described as a key role.  He’s also coming off his Emmy-nominated performance as Prince Philip in The Crown. Smith is widely known for his role as the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who.

There’s no information on an expected release date or any confirmation on Smith’s role, but Talkies Network will continue to keep you updated as news on the film develops.
