Today, Toni Myers, a highly-accomplished Canadian filmmaker and IMAX film trailblazer whose 40+ years of work has influenced millions of people – particularly young people – around the world, will be recognized by receiving the prestigious Order of Canada.
Myers is behind some of IMAX’s best documentaries, including A Beautiful Planet (narrated by Jennifer Lawrence), Hubble (narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Space Station 3D (narrated by Tom Cruise).
The Order of Canada is one of our nation’s highest honours and is awarded to those individuals whose service shapes our society; whose innovations ignite our imaginations; and whose compassion unites our communities. Appointed by the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, those invested into the Order of Canada have varying contributions, but all have taken to heart the motto of the Order: DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM meaning “They desire a better country.”
Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn had this to say about the legendary director:
“With a keen understanding, a masterful eye, and a way with words, Toni Myers has led audiences on the most remarkable journeys exploring our beautiful planet and our mysterious universe. She’s a true pioneer, an IMAX legend, and now a very deserving recipient of one of her nation’s highest honors. Congratulations, Toni, and thank you for bringing us all a new perspective and awareness of the world that will continue to inspire for many years to come.”
Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, spoke about how Myers’ films inspired those in the industry:
“Toni is a visionary storyteller and beloved member of the IMAX family who has taken millions of audiences around the world to incredible places they could only dream of going. Her films have inspired hope in new generations to change the world around us for the better, and on behalf of IMAX we want to congratulate Toni on these extremely prestigious and well-deserved honors. I am fortunate to call Toni a dear friend of 25 years. We can’t thank her enough for the enormous contributions she has made to the world of film and to IMAX’s legacy.”
Throughout her career in directing, writing, producing and editing 18 IMAX films Toni has worked with some of today’s top Hollywood talent, talents of the past like John Lennon and has trained 145 astronauts and cosmonauts in filmmaking during 24 space missions. Her films have been enjoyed by millions of people but more importantly, they’ve inspired hope in new generations to change the world around us for the better.
