Marvel Studios Developing ‘What If?’ TV Series For Disney+

What if Tony Stark never announced himself as Iron Man? What If Jessica Jones Had Joined the Avengers? These are the kinds of questions that Marvel aimed to ask in their What If? comic series. Now, the project will see a new light as they are heading to the world of streaming.

According to SlashFilm, Marvel Studios is developing a new television series for the Disney+ streaming service based on What If?. The new animated show will be overseen by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, but the stories will not be canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The show will provide a look into how key moments within the MCU could have unfolded differently, like what if Thor led the invasion of New York (as an example, not a literal episode)? The series leaves the door open for current MCU actors to reprise their famous roles as the time commitment for voice acting is a lot less than for live-action features. Similar to the source material, the show would function as an anthology series.

What If, sometimes referred to as What If…?, is a series of comic books published by Marvel Comics whose stories explore how the Marvel Universe might have unfolded if key moments in its history had not occurred as they did in mainstream continuity. What If comics have been published in eleven series as well as many stand-alone issues since the 1970s.

What If? is just the latest in a long line of previously announced Marvel Studios projects for streaming platforms. Disney+ will also play host to a Loki series, Scarlet Witch and The Vision, Falcon/Winter Solider, and a Lady Sif series.

Last month it was revealed that Jeph Loeb would be overseeing new Marvel series on the Hulu streaming service, including Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, Tigra & Dazzler Show, Howard the Duck,  and a crossover special Marvel’s The Offenders.
