This week does not seem to want to stop with the shocking news.
That’s right ladies and gentlemen, a sequel to Transformers: The Last Knight is in the works at Paramount. While the film earned $605 million worldwide in 2017, the lowest gross for any movie in the main Transformers franchise by over $100 million, that has not stopped the studio from exploring their story options.
Franchise producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura announced the sequel in an interview with Japanese entertainment tradeCinema , also confirming that Optimus Prime will appear in the previously announced Bumblebee 2:
“We are already working on two projects and both have scripts under development. One is the latest in the main family series following the events of Transformers: The Last Knight and the other is a sequel to Bumblebee. So, we are thinking of films where Optimus Prime and Bumblebee will be the buddies, but when Optimus and Bumblebee are the movies of the protagonists … how human beings get involved in their drama In the first place, the size is different between human beings and theirs …. It’s a worrying point (laughs).”
Although Bumblebee earned less money at the box office than The Last Knight, it still remains a critical and commercial success. It earned a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and raked in $400+ million at the global box office on a more modest budget.
The Last Knight garnered the worst reviews of the entire franchise, with critics lambasting the films convoluted plot, tired jokes, and overuse of visuals. That being said, with a sequel being confirmed, one would assume that Paramount has learned from the past mistakes of the franchise and is taking the sequel in a different direction.
It is unclear how involved Michael Bay is with this newly announced Transformers film.
