From Scotland in the 1300s to the squared circle, Florence Pugh is set to enter yet another new territory: the superhero genre.
Sources have confirmed to us that Pugh has been cast in Marvel Studios’ Black Widow solo movie. The film sees Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as the MCU’s favourite spy/superhero in a film that fans have wanted for years.
Pugh has been high on Marvel’s list for a second female lead since last fall, but Marvel wanted to open up the field to other actresses at the beginning of the year. After reportedly meeting with several candidates, the studio circled back to Pugh after she drew strong reviews for the MGM comedy-drama Fighting With My Family.
That Hashtag show previously reported that Marvel’s wishlist for the role also included Emma Watson,Alice Englert, and Dar Zuzovsky, were all previously in the running for the role. Variety (who also confirmed Pugh’s casting) also stated that Saoirse Ronan was at one point considered.
Cate Shortland has signed on to direct, with Jac Schaeffer penning the script. The film has been in development for a while, but picked up momentum last year after Schaeffer’s hire. Kevin Feige is producing the highly anticipated feature.
