Not only is a Shazam! sequel in the works, but it already has a writer!
Henry Gayden, who wrote the screenplay for DC superhero movie Shazam! has been tapped to write the sequel for DC and New Line, according to TheWrap. The team of director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran are also expected to return.
Shazam! was the #1 film worldwide this weekend, raking in a stellar domestic total of of $56.8 million and $102.3 internationally for a worldwide figure of $159.1 million on a relatively modest budget of $90 million.
Gayden will be incredibly busy over the next few years, as he is also adapting Last Human, a live-action science fiction film from Spider-Verse team Phil Lord and Christopher Miller based on the upcoming novel of the same name by Lee Bacon. Sony/TriStar won a bidding war for the novel’s film rights.
Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a teenage boy who can transform into an adult superhero, played by Zachary Levi. Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, and Djimon Hounsou also star.
