Michelle Yeoh is going from Star Fleet to Pandora.
The Crazy Rich Asians and Star Trek: Discovery star has been in cast in the upcoming Avatar sequels to play a scientist named scientist Dr. Karina Mogue.
“Throughout her career, Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with Michelle to do the same thing on the Avatar sequels,” Avatar director James Cameron said in a statement.
Cameron’s Avatar, released in 2009, still ranks as the highest grossing film of all time, with $2.7 billion globally. The first of four sequels is dated for Dec. 18, 2020, and stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. Following the acquisition by Disney of Fox, the house of mouse is now in charge of the mega franchise.
Yeoh has enjoyed an acclaimed career following her role in in Ang Lee’s groundbreaking martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000. She was recently seen in the critically and commercially successful romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, which earned $238 million after opening in August. She made her Star Trek franchise debut as Capt. Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery, and is now set to lead a spin-off show centered on her character.
