Emma Thompson is in early talks to star alongside Emma Stone in Disney’s Cruella, an upcoming live-action origin story based on the classic 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil.
De Vil, who will be portrayed by Stone in the new movie, was played by Glenn Close in the previous 1996 live-action film and portrayed her character as the head of a fashion house. Just like the original 1961 animated film, De Vil was obsessed with capturing the puppies and went to great lengths to try and turn them into fashion statements. It’s currently unknown where this movie will pick up in terms of Cruella de Vil’s timeline, as is the role that Thompson would be playing.
Craig Gillespie, director of I, Tonya, is leading the film along with Marc Platt, Kristin Burr, and Andrew Gunn who are all producing. Tony McNamara wrote the most recent version of the script with Dana Fox writing a previous draft.
Thompson previously played Mrs. Potts in Disney’s 2017 box office hit Beauty and the Beast and also played P.L. Travers, author of “Mary Poppins” in Saving Mr. Banks. Thompson has two upcoming roles, one in Amazon Studios Late Night and another in Men in Black: International, both of which set to release on June 7.
Disney recently announced that the film would be released on Dec. 23, 2020, signaling the project’s pre-production.
