Jaume Collet-Serra in Talks to Direct Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’

The one who was corrupted is coming.

When DC announced that Shazam! was getting a solo movie, fans everywhere expected his archenemy, Black Adam, to appear in some capacity. Dwayne Johnson was then cast in the role, saying that this was a passion role for him. Along the way however, both the producers and Johnson decided that it would be better to split Shazam and Black Adam up, giving both characters solo films before having the face off in a future film. Now, the long-awaited project may have finally found a director.

A new report from Observer has Run All Night and The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra as one of the potential directors being considered for Warner Bros. and New Line’s Black Adam. Not only that, but Collet-Serra is apparently the studio’s top choice. Johnson and Collet-Serra have worked together in the past on Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise film, also starring Emily Blunt.

In April, Johnson updated fans on the project’s progress in an Instagram video and revealed why he was no longer a part of Shazam!.

“This project…we had some challenges and we took a risk. As we were developing this a few years ago, the challenges and the struggles that we were having and that was gnawing at my gut [was] that we were trying to tell two origin stories in one script…. The challenges were, as you guys can imagine, you’re trying to tell two very big origin stories in the world of comic books of this DC Universe—two very important characters—trying to tell both their origin stories in one script. I didn’t think it was working. We should start shooting [Black Adam] in about a year.”

Beginning as a full-fledged villain while under the Fawcett Comics umbrella, Black Adam slowly morphed into a corrupted anti-hero when he and Shazam moved over to DC Comics. He then embarked on a far nobler path than his younger self. Johnson was officially cast in the role back in 2014, though he was connected to the project for years leading up to that.
