Quentin Tarantino Confirms Script and R-Rating for His ‘Star Trek’ Movie

Quentin Tarantino is starting to do press for his upcoming film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. In addition however, he’s also providing updates on what could very much be his next film.

For months now, Tarantino has been reportedly attached to the Star Trek franchise, with reports coming out saying that he was in talks to direct a new film set in the universe. The news of a Tarantino-directed Star Trek film comes after plans for the proposed Star Trek 4 were dropped (Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth both left the project after pay talks fell through). While there hasn’t been many updates on the film, that changed yesterday.

Tarantino was said to have pitched the idea for the film to Star Trek film producer JJ Abrams (who directed 2009’s Star Trek and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness). Abrams liked the idea so much that he brought it to Paramount, who sent it to a writers room for script development. Screenwriter Mark L. Smith came out of that room tasked with penning the screenplay for the film.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Tarantino confirms that Smith’s draft is complete and awaiting Tarantino’s notes.

“There’s a script that exists for it now, I need to weigh in on it, but haven’t been able to do that yet.”

Not only that, but Tarantino also confirmed a long-standing rumor that film will indeed be rated R:

“It’s an R-rated movie. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated.”

What still remains to be seen however is if the current cast returns for this film. As said, the fourth film in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise would have centered on Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk, and Chris Hemsworth’s George Kirk, in a father/son story. When both left the project, talks of the fourth film fell through, leaving cast members John Cho, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Zoe Saldana, in limbo.
