Yet another major actor is joining Marvel Studios’ most out there project yet.
Salma Hayek, known for her roles in Frida, Tale of Tales and The Hitman’s Bodyguard, is in talks to join The Eternals. The report comes from TheWrap, who say that Hayek’s role has not been disclosed yet. She joins the previously cast Richard Madden and Kumail Nanjiani.
Weirdly however, the original report omits Angelina Jolie’s name from the confirmed cast. Jolie was the first actress attached to the project, and was expected to be the lead of the film. Speculation points to her starring as Sersi while Richard Madden would play Ikaris, with the film centering on a love story between the two.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has remained tight-lipped on the project so far, but did speak to ScreenRant about what it would be like to adapt a Jack Kirby property:
“Well, one of the cool things about that property and what Jack Kirby did with it and what’s been done with it in recent years is it does tie into they’re called Eternals, they’ve been around for a long time. You know?” Feige said. “There’s this notion of all of these myths and legends that we know from ancient times, were they inspired by the Eternals? Kevin Feige: Were they Eternals? It’s a very … you know, it’s an ancient aliens kind of sci-fi trope that we think would be fun to explore someday.”
The Eternals has tapped Chloe Zhao as director, who will direct a script from brothers Matthew and Ryan Firpo. Marvel has not announced a release date for the film yet, but look towards SDCC 2019 for that news…
