Disney’s Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’ Adds Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina

Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are in talks to star in Disney’s live-action remake of the studio’s 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid.

The project already has Rob Marshall serving as director and has plenty of casting rumors including Melissa McCarthy already being in talks to play Ursula, the villain. Marc Platt will be producing. alongside Rob Marshall, John DeLuca, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film will have all the well-known songs but will also include new material. Original composer Alan Menken is teaming with Lin-Manuel Miranda, composing and co-writing new lyrics with Miranda.

The animated movie was loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name which was about a mermaid named Ariel who longs to be human after falling in love with a prince. Ariel makes a deal with Ursula, who fulfills her wish but takes her voice. If the proposed deals go through, Tremblay would be playing Flounder the fish, Ariel’s best friend, and Awkwafina would be playing Scuttle, a seagull and another friend of Ariel’s. In the original animated film, Jason Marin voiced Flounder and Buddy Hackett voiced Scuttle.

Jacob Tremblay’s breakout role was in Room, the 2015 film where he starred alongside Brie Larson. He starred with Julia Roberts in Wonder and was also in Shane Black’s Predator. He will appear next with Ewan McGregor in Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.

Awkwafina had a significant role in last year’s Crazy Rich Asians and can be seen next in Sony’s upcoming Jumanji sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. She is currently shooting Breaking News in Yuba County and stars in the well-received Sundance drama, The Farewell, which is planned to release in July. She is also voicing a character in Netflix’s upcoming series, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
