Samuel L. Jackson will be joining Chris Rock in Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of Saw.
In the reboot, Rock will be playing a police detective who’s in charge of investigating a series of gruesome crimes. Jackson will portray Rock’s father. Max Minghella, who plays Nick in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and who recently directed the film Teen Spirit, also joins the cast as the partner of Rock’s character.
Original Saw filmmakers Mark Burg and Oren Koules will be returning to produce Saw. Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed the second, third and fourth installments of the Saw franchise, will be directing the new movie.
The franchise is centered around the fictional character John Kramer, aka the Jigsaw Killer, who traps victims in situations that are made to test their will to live. In all eight of the films, Jigsaw is portrayed by Tobin Bell. The franchise has certainly been highly profitable for Lionsgate, earning nearly $1 billion worldwide and it’s most recent movie, 2017’s Jigsaw, earning $100 million worldwide.
Lionsgate is keeping plot details heavily under wraps other than saying it will offer the same intricate traps, crafty clues, and avid suspense that fans received from the original films. Production has officially begun on the upcoming Saw and the film is expected to be released on Oct. 23, 2020.
