Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach Co-Writing Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Movie

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have both signed on to be co-writers for Warner Bros.’ upcoming Barbie movie, which has Margot Robbie set to star as the classic children’s doll. There are also rumors that Gerwig is a potential candidate for the film’s role as director, though no deal has been confirmed.

Both Gerwig and Baumbach have been busy in the past few years. Gerwig’s upcoming Little Women adaptation for Sony is currently in post-production. The film has a star-studded cast which includes Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Timothee Chalamet, Florence Pugh, and Meryl Streep, and is expected to be a favorite in this year’s award season. As for Noah Baumbach, his 2017 directorial project The Meyerwitz Stories won the Palm Dog award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and received plenty of love from critics. His latest project, an untitled Netflix film starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, will be released this fall.

The global brand of Barbie has earned sales of over $3 billion worldwide through its 50+ years of existence, the doll herself has taken on more than 150 roles. This Barbie adaptation is the first announced deal to come from Mattel’s newly-established Mattel Films, led by producer Robbie Brenner, as well as the first collaboration between Mattel Films and Warner Bros. Pictures.
