Harry Styles in Early Talks to Play Prince Eric in Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’

Seems like the DIRECTION Harry Styles is going in is… under the sea?

That’s right, Harry Styles is reportedly in talks to play Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid film. Earlier this month, Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in the remake.

The decision to cast Bailey and now Styles confirms that Disney is 100% dedicated to making the music a central component of the remake. Funny enough, the character of Eric performed no songs in the 1989 original. When the Broadway musical debuted in the 2000s, Eric was performing on several songs, including two solos. Speculation points to the film either pulling from the musical for Eric, or Alan Menkan and Lin-Manuel Miranda cooking up new tracks for Eric to perform on.

Eric is the human prince who acts as Ariel’s main love interest. The mermaid saves the prince from drowning and then makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula to exchange her voice for legs in order for a chance to make him fall in love with her.

Styles was famously a member of boy band One Direction who then moved onto a budding career in acting. Styles made his acting debut with Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama that grossed over $526 million worldwide.

The remake has also cast Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

The Little Mermaid is set to be directed by Rob Marshall, and written by David Magee. Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and exec produced the studio’s live-action Aladdin remake, is producing. Marshall, John DeLuca, and Lin-Manuel Miranda also act as producers on the pic.
