Disney is Reportedly “Unimpressed” with ‘X-Men’ Spinoff ‘The New Mutants’

Categorize this under “what did you expect,” but Disney is apparently unimpressed with the final Fox/X-Men film, The New Mutants.

The report comes from Variety, who detail the aftermath of Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox assets, which included the company’s film division, 20th Century Fox. According to the trade, Disney has not taken a liking to what director Josh Boone and co. have crafted with the horror-infused X-Men spinoff:

“Disney is optimistic that handing Fox superhero properties such as “Fantastic Four” and “X-Men” to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will improve the quality of these movies, but bumps must be smoothed over in that transition. The studio is unimpressed with “New Mutants,” an “X-Men” spinoff with a haunted-house vibe, and believes it has limited box office potential.”

Originally slated to release in 2018, The New Mutants was set to be the first in a trilogy of horror films set in the X-Men cinematic universe. The film was then delayed for an August 2019 release, but was then again delayed until mid-2020. The film marks the final entry for Fox’s mutant franchise.

Insiders have speculated in the past as to if the film will even be released in theatres. With Disney now having full control over Hulu, sources say it is very possible that Disney just releases the film on the streaming platform to mitigate damage. The mouse house has already taken quite the hit from the fauilure of Dark Phoenix.

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga, The New Mutants follows a group of young mutants held in a secret facility fight to save themselves.

New Mutants will hopefully hit theaters on April 3rd, 2020
